CME Blast

News from Steve

Dear Copper Mesa Community,

Well, this is it, my last Copper Mesa Blast! Many staff, friends, family, and parents have asked me how I feel about retiring. Honestly, I feel that this is just the end of the school year as we have all been counting down the last couple of weeks!! Principal colleagues of mine who have retired in the past say that August is when it hits you because everyone is back to school. It will be strange not being back to Copper Mesa in August but I know the school is in awesome hands with Ms. Laviaguerre and the entire CME staff!

When I was a principal at another school in Douglas County my director asked me what I wanted my legacy to be when I retired. At that time, retirement was the furthest thing from my mind. However, I thought of that question this morning and it is my sincere hope that I have made a positive impact on students. From saying good morning to them, giving them high fives or first bumps through the day, to recognizing their Cougar Pride Awards, to having them read a piece of their writing to me, to chatting with me in my office when they made a poor choice. I hope that I have modeled for them what kindness looks like, what it means to persevere, that we all make mistakes, but we can learn from them. I hope that when they leave Copper Mesa, they are ready not just for middle school, but they have learned some life skills and academic readiness that they can apply for the rest of their lives!

Thank you for the kindness you have shown me all of these years. For several of you, you have been at Copper Mesa since I arrived in February of 2016. You welcomed me with open arms and I have been so fortunate to walk alongside you and your kids as they have grown up. It was so cool to see the graduating seniors at the clap-out on Monday and then again at Red Rocks yesterday. Thank you to all of you who came to the community picnic on Sunday, and for all the kind cards and gifts. Our students have also written awesome cards that are displayed throughout the building and I have so loved looking at them!

Copper Mesa is a special place. A place that I will hold close to my heart forever. I will always remember the amazing things that have happened at our school. Our amazing CMEA group, our amazing fundraising efforts, our amazing job of earning the John Irwin Award for Academic Excellence these last two years, our amazing CME staff, our amazing parents, and our amazing students.

I will be saying goodbye to our sixth graders during our sixth-grade continuation today and to all the students during morning announcements and as I see them throughout the day. However, it is not goodbye forever, because I just may show up at our sixth-grade kickball game next year, or watch Ms. Laviauguerre and our new Assistant Principal do something crazy to reach our fundraising goal, or when we celebrate Copper Mesa’s 20th year of being a school. We are staying in Colorado, so who knows when we will run into each other again!

Well, not such a short last blast, but I am trying to put into words how much Copper Mesa has meant to me. Not doing a great job, but hopefully, my actions all these years have shown you how special Copper Mesa is to me and how proud I have been to serve as the Principal! I wish you all the most wonderful summer! As I often say, spend the extra time this summer loving on your children as they are all so very special!!

Thank you,

Steve
